The purpose of the Orange City School Media Center is to provide service and a variety of instructional materials to support the school’s curriculum. We feel the Media Center should be a place for research and study where students work independently and in groups under the guidance of the media specialist and the classroom teacher.
Media Center Schedule
The media center will be open from 7:35 a.m. through 2:35 p.m. for teachers. Kindergarten through fifth grade will participate in flexible access use of the media center in accordance with the Handbook for School Media Services (Volusia County, FL).
A weekly schedule will be posted for teachers to sign up their classes for:
· computer lab*
· class research/reference work*
· story time*
· media center skills instruction*
· book check-out
*To allow for adequate planning time please make arrangements one week prior to the date that you sign up for any type of media instruction (with the exception of book check-out).
Small groups may visit the media center anytime during the school day with a pass.
Check-Out Policies and Procedures
The media center utilizes the computerized circulation system CIRC PLUS for all materials. All items must be checked out by the computer.
Students in grades K-1 may check out one book which is good for one week. Students in grades 2-5 may check out two books which are good for 2 weeks. Books may be renewed for an additional week. Teachers are encouraged to remind students of the importance of returning books in a timely manner. Overdue fines will not be charged, however students are financially responsible for any lost or damaged books. Lost or damaged books should be paid for in the media center. Overdue lists and notices will be printed throughout the school year. Check-out privileges are subject to being suspended until past due materials have been returned.
Teachers’ materials are checked out for the school year unless another request for the materials is received. The exception is videotapes that will be checked out for 2 weeks. Teachers are asked to return materials as soon as an instructional unit is completed. Holiday materials should be returned immediately after use.
Reading Counts
Grades 1-5 participate in the RC program. These students are encouraged to visit the library often. It is suggested that students in grades 3-5 check out one Reading Counts book and one non-RC book. Reading Counts will be supported in the media center in conjunction with M's Cafe and Book Club.
Internet Access
The media specialist provides a variety of appropriate information and communication technology by facilitating electronic access to information resources. An Internet permission form must be on file prior to students using this service. Students are closely monitored while online. These are kept on file at the media center.
Request for Media Center Materials
Email request forms should be turned in at least one week in advance of anticipated need to ensure adequate time to process the order. The requested materials will be checked out and can be picked up by the teacher.
Professional Materials
Professional materials are provided in the professional area of the media center. These materials include professional books and periodicals to enrich and supplement the instructional focus of the curriculum. Check out this area for the latest new and innovative educational ideas to use with your class!
Audiovisual Equipment
The following is a list of some of the equipment available to you from the media center:
· CD/tape players
· tape recorders
· video camera
· overhead projectors
· VCR players and recorders
· DVD players
· LCD projectors
Operation
If instruction is desired by a staff member in the operation of any AV equipment, please schedule a time with the media center staff. Please use equipment straps to secure equipment on carts. DO NOT ALLOW STUDENTS TO TRANSPORT AV EQUIPMENT!
Maintenance
Never continue to operate equipment that is not working properly. Equipment in need of repair should be brought to the media center. Please label the equipment with your name and a statement of the problem. All equipment stays in the classroom it is assigned to for inventory purposes. Please notify the person in charge of inventory in the main office when any equipment needs to be changed to a different location by completing the Inventory Movement Form.
Copyright
Copyright compliance guidelines as provided by the Volusia County School District must be followed when utilizing any videotape. Videotapes from the media center collection may be shown in the classroom. To show any other video, you must complete the VCSB permission form, have it signed by an Orange City School administrator and document the video’s educational use in your lesson plans. This form can be obtained from the media center staff.

Any video with a PG or PG-13 rating must be approved by an OCS administrator and parent permission must be obtained using the designated forms. These forms can be obtained from the media center staff.
Lamination
Lamination will be done once a week by a media staff professional. Teachers are to label all items and then place them in their grade level organizer.
Procedures and tips:
· Remove all staples, brads, and metal clasps from items to be laminated.
· Items up to 22 inches wide only. Wider items can be folded in half and then slit open, however only one side will be laminated.
· Use a water-based adhesive for materials.
· Thicker items should be run at slower speeds.
· Put your name and grade level on the back of the piece to be laminated.
ArtWaxer
The Artwaxer® applies a thin coating of Artwax® to paper, plastic, die cut, laminated, or various other items, and it will not damage walls. Waxed items may be repositioned and can be stored and used again. The unique open-end roller system allows items of any size to be waxed.
Artwaxing will be done once per week by media center staff
Procedures:
· Remove all staples, brads, and metal clasps from items.
· Be sure to put your name and grade level on the back of the material you wish to be Artwaxed.
· Put the item(s) you would like to be Artwaxed in the proper box.
Volunteers
The media center volunteer program creates opportunities for individuals to feel personal satisfaction while performing a valuable service for the school and also greatly supplements the efforts of the media specialist. Days and hours are flexible for volunteering in the media center.
We would like to serve you in any way that we can in order for you to do your important job of teaching. Please help us by:
· Giving us your media requests in writing and utilizing media center forms
· Giving us a 24-hour notice of use of equipment
